Gout is a disease resulting from excessive uric acid in the blood, which causes inflammation in the joints. It has acute and chronic phases. It is a progressive disease. Acute attacks of gout can be very painful. Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism, and humans and higher apes lack an enzyme that further degrades uric acid. Two thirds of the uric acid formed each day is eliminated in the gastrointestinal tract or kidneys.  Supersaturation of uric acid can lead to crystal accumulation and deposition in the joints and tissues to which the immune system reacts. Uric acid which occur in tophaceou gout appear as hard nodules under the skin and can cause considerable destruction and discomfort.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Gout

Gout is a disease that results from an overload of uric acid in the body. This overload of uric acid leads to the formation of tiny crystals of urate that deposit in tissues of the body, especially the joints. When crystals form in the joints, it causes recurring the attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis). Chronic gout can also lead to deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in or/and around the joints and may cause joint destruction, decreased kidney function, and kidney stones. Gout has the unique distinction of being one of the most frequently recorded in medical illnesses throughout the history. It is often related to an inherited abnormality in the body’s ability to process uric acid. Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines that are part of many foods we eat. An abnormality in handling uric acid can cause attacks of painful arthritis (gout attack), kidney stones, and blockage of the kidney-filtering tubules with uric acid crystals, leading to kidney failure. On the other hand, some people may only develop elevated blood uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) without having arthritis or kidney problems. The term gout refers the disease that is caused by an overload of uric acid in the body, resulting in painful arthritic attacks and deposits of lumps of uric acid crystals in body tissues. Gouty arthritis is typically an extremely painful attack with a rapid onset of joint inflammation.

  • Avoiding consumption of food which contain purines.
  • Reducing the intake of alcohol.
  • Weight reduction.
  • Altered medication for high blood pressure.

    • One should drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins from the blood and to make kidneys work properly.
    • Green leafy vegetables are highly recommended to the patients suffering from gout.
    • Patient should be given vegetable juice like carrot or beet.
    • Consume wheat, green gram, raisins, ginger, milk .
    • Mix some these vegetables and prepare a mixed-veg juice, which also is very effective for treating gout.
    • Avoid horse raiding, or other sports which involves lot of joint movements.
    • Most common fruits useful for the treatment of gout include apples, banana, grapes, etc. Grapes too are very good, as it clears off the toxic acid present along with uric acid.
    • Similarly, banana is also a very useful fruit. Patient should take 6-8 bananas a day.
