Weight Management

Obesity (weight management) :

Obesity means fatness in  the body. Overweight. A person over 30 BMI means obese person. According to the Ayurvedic principals it is kafaj dhatu disorder and thus it results in increase in medo dhatu ( Fatty or adipose tissues). Overweight problem arises when your food intake is not balanced by a proper digestion or metabolism.

Major health & psychological risks

Shorter Life Expectancy (Compared to people of normal weight, obese people have a 50% to 100% increased risk of dying prematurely)

Obese people have more risk for:

  • Heart disease
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Certain types of cancer (breast, uterine, colon)
  • Digestive disorders (e.g., gastro esophageal reflux disease, or GERD)
  • Breathing difficulties (e.g., sleep apnea, asthma)
  • Psychological problems such as depression
  • Problems with fertility and pregnancy
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Dyslipidemia (high cholesterol or triglycerides)

Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

BMI Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

BMI calculation

Formula for kilograms & meters :

weight (kg)/[height (m)]2

Example: Height = 165 cm (1.65 m), Weight = 68 kg Calculation: 68 / (1.65)2 = 24.98

Formula For pounds & inches:

weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x703

Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703

Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5’5″(65″)

Calculation: [150/ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96

Ayurvedic Treatment for Controlling obesity :

A huge number of people undergo some form of treatment or remedy toreduce their weight, usually either in an attempt to improve their health, to improve their lifestyle, or for cosmetic reasons. In Ayurveda and at our centre Ayurveda Yogashram in Amritsar, India, overweight is managed by scientific analysis of the body, mind and soul by pulse diagnosis. We advice a special diet regimen, a special type of food which increases the body fire and also those herbal combinations those are helpful in burning extra fatwithout producing any extra side effect.

Diet Alternation:

The generally recommended treatment for being overweight is a modified and controlled diet. In this case avoid taking junk food, chips, spicy food, sweets, cold drinks, ice creams, soft drinks and sodas. In Ayurvedic terminology giving up all types of kafaj ahar vihar. Fennal seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds are good for this. Ghee, butter, dairy products should be avoided. roasted and boiled thing are good alternatives. Exercise:

It is a must part of the all weight management theories. Regular physical activity is critical for the prevention of abnormal weight gain and weight maintenance. The current recommendation for the amount of physical activity is 30 to 60 minutes of regular exercise daily. Yoga is definitely is 100 % sure technique. Studies suggest that reducing calorie intake by itself (dieting) may have short-term effects but does not lead to long-term weight loss, and can often result in gaining back all of the lost weight and more in the longer term. For this reason, it is generally recommended that weight-loss diets not be attempted on their own but instead in combination with increased exercise and long-term planning and weight management. According to our study it is found that Power Yoga is very effective in weight management and controlling obesity. Your waist to hip ration should not exceed 0.8 for women and 1.0 for men. Hath yoga and vinyas Yoga also plays an important role in obesity

Diet Alternation:

  • Take plenty of lukewarm water
  • Take ginger tea 2-3 times in a day
  • Take Ayurvedic herbs like gugulu, gotu kala, ginger , dry ginger powder
  • Take spices like cumin, ginger, mustard seed, black pepper, long pepper
  • Fasting should be there
