What is Hair Fall? Hair Fall in Men and Women?


Hair that can be seen on every human body except the palm and sole of the person. Hair is made up of protein called Keratin that is produced by the hair follicles on the outer surface of skin. These follicles are responsible in producing new hair cells and old cells are removed at a rate of about six inches in a year, these hair are a string of dead keratin cells. Normally there are around 100000 to 150000 hair found in an adult and around 100 hair trings are lost by the adults which is very much normal. Each follicle has its own life and it mainly depends upon the age, disease and many other factors. As the age of a person grows he/she may face the problem of Hair fall which can be due to any reason.

Hairfall can be of various types like:

  • Involutional Alopecia: This type of problem is often seen when the hair starts thinning with age as more of the hair follicles go to the resting phase and remaining hair becomes shorter and fewer. It is quite a natural process that impacts the person with age.
  • Androgenic Alopecia: This type of hair fall problem is mainly because of genetic issues that can affect both men as well as women. In men the problem can begin in their teens or at early ’20s. Men start losing their hair from the crown area and the frontal scalp. In women, the problem is not noticeable at an early stage and comes in notice after they are on their 40s or so. They may have a general thinning of hair from the entire scalp or at the crown area.
  • Alopecia Areata: This problem starts suddenly with hair loss in patches which may affect children as well as young adults. The hair loss can result in complete baldness but the hair is regained after a few years.
  • Alopecia Universalis: In this type of hair fall problem the whole body hair is lost including eyelashes, eyebrows and Public hair.
  • Trichotillomania: This is the problem seen with the psychological person who intends to pull their own hair.
  • Telogen effluvium: This is a temporary phase of hair fall when most of the follicles are at their resting phase and there are changes occurring in the hair growth cycle.
  • Scarring Alopecias: This type of problem often results in permanent hair loss because of any reason like skin disorder or anything.

Hair fall can be caused because of many reasons such as

  • Pattern hair loss: This type of hair fall is mainly caused due to genetic issues or hormones imbalance.
  • Infection: The problem can be seen in a person when he/she is facing some sort of infection like dissecting cellulitis, fungal infections or folliculitis.
  • Drugs: The problem can be seen in the person who is under strong medication like
  • Trauma
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Thyroid
  • Other causes for hair fall can be due to the medications used to treat diseases like cancer, High blood pressure, arthritis, depression and heart problems
  • It can also be caused because of a lack in protein content and other necessary nutrients in our body.


At an initial stage, the person can diagnose the [problem by looking into the number of hair in his/her comb while combining the hair if it is more than 100 strands then the person should start taking the necessary measures or do some home remedies to prevent the hair loss. If the problem still persists then he/she may consult a doctor. The doctor may diagnose the problem in many ways but firstly the doctor takes physical examination like taking your family history or medical history. At later stage, he may ask you to undergo certain tests to identify the reason behind the problem. The test prescribed by the doctor will be like a blood test, pull test, scalp biopsy and light microscopy.


Hairfall problem in men is often because of hereditary or is triggered by the genes. It may also occur due to other reasons like hormonal changes, medical issues or may be due to the side effect of drugs been taken by the person for the treatment of diseases like cancer, depression or any other problem. Radiation treatment or chemotherapy is also the main reason for the total hair fall but the hair regains the growth after a certain period of time. Other reasons behind the hair fall may include stress, infections or immune disorder.

There are many reasons for the hair fall in women like hormonal changes, genetics, medical conditions like thyroid, menopause, stress, crash diets which lead to the deficiency of various nutrients like protein and all for healthy hair. Even the deficiency of Vitamin B in the body can lead to hair fall problem.

We are mentioning some of the solutions to prevent hair fall which we can do at our home only but if the problem persists then the person should consult a dermatologist:

  • One should wash hair with mild shampoo regularly.
  • Ensure you are in taking enough of Vitamin A and vitamin E to maintain healthy hair.
  • A protein-rich diet can help you in preventing from hair fall.
  • One should massage the scalp with essential oils at least twice in a week which helps the hair follicles remain active.
  • Never comb your hair when they are wet or immediately after hair bath.
  • Applying any of the juices of onion, garlic or ginger once in a week to get noticeable results.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Reduce the intake of alcohol.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Exercise regularly at least for 30 minutes in a day.
  • Try to keep yourself away from stress.
  • Less use of hairdryers as they damage the hair.
